1930s Gramophone

We have a 1930s Gramophone in our Technology through Time Collection.

It is an HMV Model 101 with on the corner to store needles. The first device which was available for the public to play back recorded sound was the phonograph, which played wax or tinfoil cylinders. The gramophone was developed by the German inventor Emile Berliner in 1888, and it played flat discs instead of cylinders. These became known as records.
